Black Lives Matter

The mission of The Gulf Coast Equality Council has always been to support and stand for the equality of all people. We are angry, hurt, and saddened about the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. Our condolences, prayers, and thoughts go out to his family.

We support the call for justice. People from across the United States, and the world, have come together to protest his death and address the problem of police brutality towards the black community. These protests bring to the forefront the struggle and fight for racial justice in the United States. Events of police brutality cannot be allowed to continue.

The LGBTQ+ community stands with our black community in solidarity. We condemn racism, hate, violence, and prejudice in any form. This cannot be accepted or tolerated. Working together, we will fight until everyone is truly equal. We will always remember that “Black Lives Matter”.

The word 'equality' shows up too much in our founding documents for anyone to pretend it's not the American way. - Martha Plimpton

This year for Pride, Gulf Coast Equality Council and the Outreach Committee of Gulf Coast Equality Council made donations to support two nonprofits that help and support the Black Lives Matter movement. We are happy to report the two nonprofits we have chosen. These donations will help to advance their causes and work. We encourage everyone to help and support these nonprofits as well.

Gulf Coast Equality Council made a $300.00 donation to “The National Black Justice Coalition”. The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS. NBJC’s mission is to end racism, homophobia, and LGBTQ/SGL (same gender loving) bias and stigma.

The Outreach Committee of Gulf Coast Equality Council made a $300.00 donation to “The Black Trans Advocacy”. Established in 2011, The Black Trans Advocacy Coalition (BTAC) is the only national organization led by Black Trans people to collectively address the inequities faced in the Black transgender human experience.
